Google opened its SynthID Detector, which had been limited to media professionals, to anyone worldwide in English, so people can upload an image, video or audio file and check it for the invisible watermark that Google and its partners put on AI-generated media. Google says SynthID is already on more than 180 billion of its images and videos, and OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao also embed it in their output, with Apple listed as coming soon. However, the tool only finds watermarks from models that use SynthID, and a heavily edited file can lose its mark, so a negative result doesn’t prove something wasn’t made with AI.
