Canada will impose or raise counter-tariffs on C$27.6B of US goods from 12:01 a.m. on September 8, sized off 2024 import data to match dollar-for-dollar the 50% duties Trump put on Canadian imports Saturday under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. Existing counter-tariffs on US steel and aluminum double to 50%, and hundreds of other products pick up duties of 15%, 25%, or 50%, among them cosmetics, clothing, furniture, home appliances, video game consoles, seafood, plywood, golf clubs, and toilet paper. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said most of the targeted goods have Canadian equivalents, so the duties shelter domestic industry and steer buyers to Canadian suppliers. Ottawa is adding C$7.5B in support for businesses and workers, on top of the C$25B already committed.
