Several Google DeepMind employees have resigned or are leaving over Google’s AI work for the US and Israeli militaries, according to Christopher Giles at the BBC. London research engineer Sofia Liguori quit this week and said the push into military AI left her “ashamed to work at Google,” speaking out even though her contract bars her from criticizing the company. AI researcher Andreas Kirsch, who resigned earlier this month, said Google appears to have no say over what the Pentagon does with its models and little view into how they’re deployed. Google’s Pentagon contract, signed this year, allows “any lawful government purpose.” Google said it reviews such deals against its AI principles and gives employees channels to raise concerns without retaliation.
