Amazon gained share of US food sales this year through late August while traditional grocery stores lost share, according to NielsenIQ data reported by Alex Bitter at Business Insider. Amazon’s sales of perishables like seafood, dairy, and produce grew severalfold from June to August, about a year after it began offering same-day delivery of fresh groceries in thousands of US cities and towns. The shoppers buying fresh food on Amazon skew older, often have household incomes above $100,000, and already order and spend more on Amazon than the average user, so NielsenIQ sees groceries as a way to get them shopping on Amazon even more often.
