Reservoir sued Suno and Anthropic in separate federal lawsuits on Wednesday, alleging each company copied its songs without permission to train AI that generates new music. The independent publisher’s complaints cite tracks including Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi,” Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” and Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach.” Reservoir argues that Suno’s recent licensing deals with Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe followed a plan to infringe first and settle cheaply later, and that Suno was built to replace the artists it copied. Anthropic said it disagrees with the allegations and will fight the case, while Suno declined to comment. Round Hill Music sued both companies in August, and Universal and Sony are still suing Suno.
