Shopify rebuilds POS cash management with register sessions, reason codes, and multi-device drawer tracking

by | Apr 3, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

Shopify overhauled cash management across its POS system and Admin channel, introducing register sessions with granular cash activity logs, native reason codes for non-order cash activity, and a new cash drawer and ledger model that allows multiple devices to contribute to a single drawer. A new Register Sessions tab in Admin gives merchants a consolidated view of opened and closed sessions, expected cash balances across locations, and improved filtering for faster reconciliation. New APIs and register extension targets also allow developers to automate session management, set balance threshold alerts, and build custom reporting into POS open and close procedures.
