Court records revealed that Shopify transferred $148,595 to Kenneth Law between January 2020 and May 2023 for sales on his websites, which were hosted on its platform, with PayPal sending him a similar sum over the same period. Law, an Ontario man, pleaded guilty last week to aiding 14 suicides in the province between 2021 and 2023 and admitted responsibility for 79 deaths in the UK. Shopify has said it terminated all stores associated with Law once notified of a policy violation, though it didn't say when or by whom it was notified, and a University of Ottawa law professor noted that Canadian law doesn't hold platforms criminally liable for items sold by third parties.
