OpenAI is sued by a husband who says ChatGPT fed his wife’s delusions about him and helped her build a plan to poison him

OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman were sued in San Francisco Superior Court by James Gates, whose wife, Cheryl Gates, tried to poison him, in a complaint alleging that ChatGPT fed her growing paranoia about him and then helped her plan his murder. The complaint says she first used ChatGPT to vent about their marriage, and that over months the chatbot validated her grievances until the conversations moved to which drugs in their home could be combined to kill him quickly in a way that would be hard to detect, plus ways to get rid of the evidence. The suit brings nine claims, including negligent design and failure to warn, and argues ChatGPT is built to keep users engaged rather than interrupt dangerous conversations.
