Dozens of Google DeepMind employees in London are pushing the company to remove clauses in their contracts that bar them from criticizing Google for life, including after they quit, according to The Washington Post. Staff started checking their contracts after former DeepMind employee Sophia Liguori told the BBC she’d ignore her own agreement so she could criticize Google’s work on military AI, and the discussion grew into an internal thread where some posted “1984” emojis. In that thread, an executive said the company won’t enforce the clause against people who’ve already left, and new hires’ contracts no longer include the post-employment part. But current employees want the clause removed from the contracts they’ve already signed.
