Nearly half of consumers surveyed buy secondhand at least once a month, mostly to save money, according to eBay’s 2026 Recommerce Report. Of roughly 10,500 shoppers across 10 markets, 84% listed saving money as one of their three main reasons for buying used, and 70% said it helps them manage their household budget, a share that reaches 76% for Gen Z. eBay compares the 47% monthly figure to 35% last year, but Liz Morton at Value Added Resource notes that this year’s survey counted only people who had bought secondhand, while last year’s also included people who had only sold, so the jump isn’t a clean comparison. The report also calls on governments to treat used goods as their own regulatory category and to stop taxing the same item each time it’s resold.
