Meta and Sierra launch a Personal Agent Protocol with Walmart, Shopify, and Stripe to set rules for AI agents acting for shoppers

Meta and Sierra introduced the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how AI agents like Meta’s Muse sign into and act on company websites, with Walmart, Shopify and Stripe among its partners. Agents connect through OAuth, either as a guest or logged into a customer’s account, and the customer decides whether an agent can only view their information or also take actions, while each business sets its own limits. The first version of the spec, due later this month, won’t yet include the payments add-on that would let agents buy things without handing over card numbers. OpenAI and Anthropic haven’t signed on, but Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor, who also chairs OpenAI, told CNBC he expects them to.
