Meta could owe more than $200 billion after a New Mexico jury found Facebook committed more than 43 million violations of the state’s consumer protection law by misleading users about how it protected their data after the Cambridge Analytica breach. The state is seeking the $5,000 maximum for each violation, and the judge will set penalties at an October 1 hearing. The jury agreed Facebook had misled people about its investigations into data-harvesting app developers, but rejected the state’s claims about how it removed harmful content. New Mexico stayed out of Meta’s $18 billion multistate settlement in August, which released Meta from future Cambridge Analytica liability in the states that signed it. Meta said it disagrees with the verdict.
