Numeral, a San Francisco startup that started out handling sales tax filing and remittance for e-commerce businesses, raised $100 million in a Series C led by Insight Partners, a year after its $35 million Series B, which it likely blew through on LinkedIn Ads. LOL. Its platform tracks where a business owes tax, registers it, calculates and files returns, and manages exemption certificates, with in-house tax specialists on hand for harder questions. Numeral says the volume of transactions running through its tax engine grew 327% from a year earlier. The company will use the money to build out its product for software makers, manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers, whose transactions carry more complicated tax rules, and to expand abroad. Numeral also launched a program that lets accounting firms refer clients, resell its software, or build their own services on it.
