Whatnot is tying seller commissions to volume starting September 21, with each four-week period of sales setting the rate for the next one, according to Liz Morton at Value Added Resource. Sellers under $15,000 keep paying the standard 8% in most US categories and rates step down progressively from there, bottoming out at $500,000 in published rates of 6.5% on sports and trading cards, 5% on other collectibles, 4.5% on fashion, and 4% on everything else. A seller’s Live, Marketplace, and Shop sales all count toward it. Premier Shop sellers lose their 10% commission discount on November 1, so lower-volume ones will pay more than they do now. Whatnot is also pitching the change against eBay, arguing that it charges commission on the item price while rivals charge on shipping and tax too.
