Walmart is folding restaurant meals into its same-day Express Delivery for the first time, letting customers in select markets add a freshly made Subway sandwich to a Walmart order and get it in about 30 minutes, on its own or alongside groceries and prescriptions. Subway is a natural first partner as Walmart's largest in-store tenant, with more than 1,400 counters inside its stores since 2004; orders are made fresh at those counters and dispatched with the rest of a customer's run. It's live across six states now and expands to roughly 1,400 locations by summer's end, with a flat delivery fee of $10 for Walmart+ members and about $20 for nonmembers. The move pushes Walmart directly into food delivery against DoorDash and Uber Eats, and could open up to more restaurant chains if it works.
