TikTok Shop is launching in the Netherlands on June 15, letting Dutch users buy products advertised in videos directly inside the app. Brands joining at launch include Cloudpillo, Meroda, Perfetti, Nikkie Plessen's N BRANDS, and Versuni. The in-app store has been live in the U.S. and several other markets for years, expanded to Germany and France last year, and is coming to Belgium and Austria soon. Dutch consumer group Consumentenbond raised concerns the format encourages impulse buys, particularly among young people who can rack up debt easily, citing worries about rising youth debt and the popularity of buy now, pay later. A spokesperson argued TikTok isn't a neutral sales channel since the algorithm dictates what users see and can buy. Consumentenbond won't act against the launch but is backing a separate lawsuit against ByteDance over how it handles user data, particularly from children.
