Etsy bans AI-generated craft patterns and recipes, and now requires most listings to include an unedited photo of the real item

Etsy banned AI-generated knitting, crochet, and sewing patterns, recipes, woodworking plans, and other instructions, because buyers may not find the mistakes until they’ve already spent time and materials following them. Listings for patterns, recipes, and seeds must now show at least one real photo of a finished result, and most other listings need one unedited photo showing the product itself in a real setting, with no cropping, resizing, or lighting fixes. AI-generated art is still allowed with disclosure, but Etsy now bans listings created in bulk without a human prompting and reviewing each item. Etsy plans to remove more violating listings in the coming months, after many buyers told it that not knowing which items involve AI is one of their top three reasons for not shopping more.
