OpenAI opened its Decisions API to all developers, competing with TypeSafe’s Jev in a new category of fast, cheap AI models that choose from a fixed set of options and rate their confidence instead of writing text, according to Tim Fernholz at TechCrunch. OpenAI announced the API at its September 29 developer day, and API product lead Nikunj Handa said it’s simply ChatGPT Luna reconfigured to run faster and cheaper, so answers that took a few seconds now take as little as 100 milliseconds. Speak, one of the first testers, cut the pause between actions in its AI language tutors from 1.4 seconds to 0.13. OpenAI’s model trails Jev on public benchmarks, ranking eighth and 14th on two indexes against Jev’s seventh and third, but Handa said Luna is stronger at classifying images.
