Shopify’s Tobi Lütke says he’ll build the AI-native Shopify himself, and Sam Altman says not every business is up for grabs

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke told David Senra’s Founders podcast that 2026 is the year every business comes up for grabs, that an AI-native rebuild of Shopify is coming, and that he intends to be the one who builds it, adding that he spends his nights rebuilding it to work out what he’d do from scratch. Senra put the claim to Sam Altman in an episode released Sunday, and Altman said he disagrees, that plenty of software businesses are up for grabs but not every business. Altman also conceded he got the clock wrong after GPT-4 arrived in 2023, blaming an economy where customers stick with the vendors they already have, and said everyone has been too ambitious on timelines. He called the drag a positive, and said AI still hasn’t had its iPhone moment, which he put down mostly to product failure.
