OpenAI’s annualized revenue was nearing $50 billion as September ended, putting it about $20 billion short of the $70 billion figure that circulated last month, according to the Financial Times. The higher number came from figures OpenAI gave investors so they could compare it directly with Anthropic, which counts the full price of sales made through cloud providers as its own revenue and books the provider’s share as an expense. OpenAI books only its cut of some of those partner sales, a method GAAP also allows. The lower figure surfaced while OpenAI is in talks to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion.
