OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described “a lot of daylight” between his company and Anthropic on AI regulation, arguing that society should accept some harms in exchange for AI’s benefits, according to Brendan Bordelon at Politico’s Decoded. But the gap has narrowed, with OpenAI following Anthropic in backing stricter state safety laws and Altman agreeing with CEO Dario Amodei’s call to slow down the most advanced models. Altman rejected the view that one San Francisco lab should control a dangerous technology and decide how to share its benefits, calling it “a completely unacceptable trade-off,” echoing a regulatory capture criticism Trump’s tech advisers have aimed at Anthropic. An Anthropic spokesperson said its “regulatory proposals apply only to frontier models.”
