OpenAI plans to buy Google’s TPU chips, adding a rival supplier despite Nvidia’s tens of billions of dollars invested in OpenAI

OpenAI is planning to buy TPU chips from Google, according to The Information, which couldn’t learn the terms of the purchase. OpenAI is also hiring someone to head the work of tuning its frontier models to run on TPUs, and the listing suggests that effort is just getting started. The move puts Google’s chips inside one of Nvidia’s biggest customers, as Nvidia has put tens of billions of dollars into OpenAI, and Jensen Huang wrote in August that OpenAI agreed to spend about $600 billion on Nvidia servers through 2030. Last year OpenAI said it had no “current plans to use TPUs specifically” after The Information reported it had started using them.
