Onsemi is in talks to buy Ferric, a New York chip startup, for close to $1 billion, according to Valida Pau at The Information, and a deal could come together within days, but the terms could still change or the talks could fall apart. Ferric makes integrated voltage regulators that feed power to AI chips from directly beneath or inside them rather than across a circuit board, which cuts how much energy gets lost on the way. Rival Analog Devices agreed in May to pay $1.5 billion for Empower Semiconductor, a startup with similar technology, as chipmakers look for ways to handle the power demands of AI data centers. That price is high for Ferric, a 16-year-old company that still brings in little revenue.
