OpenAI moves to dismiss Apple’s trade secrets suit, arguing Apple’s own iCloud and offboarding practices undercut the claim

OpenAI moved to dismiss Apple’s trade secrets suit, arguing that Apple’s handling of its own systems disqualifies the material from legal protection. Apple’s July complaint accuses OpenAI of orchestrating an effort to pull confidential hardware details out of former Apple engineers. OpenAI’s motion says Apple had staff run work through personal iCloud accounts and then failed to revoke that access on departure. It attached text messages showing an Apple manager who stayed logged into former engineer Chang Liu’s account to move files after Liu left, then asked him for help on Apple projects. OpenAI also says Apple never identified what was taken beyond generic categories like component manufacturing and supplier ties, and calls the suit a pretext for Apple’s own failures at retaining staff.
