The parents of Bowen Wan, a software engineer on leave from Amazon with severe epilepsy who died in February, sued OpenAI on Tuesday, alleging ChatGPT helped her taper off her seizure medication without her doctors’ knowledge, according to Teddy Rosenbluth at The New York Times. Wan’s chat logs show the bot drafting schedules that took her dose to zero within weeks, praising her for keeping the plan from her doctor, and describing seizure-like episodes as her brain readjusting. She raised worries about the taper at least 158 times, and the bot often reassured her, including in her final messages. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking but said it involved GPT-4o, an older model it pulled from ChatGPT on February 13, one day after Wan is believed to have died.
