OpenAI has 27 robotics jobs open, up from 11 in May, with advertised base salaries running from $177,000 to $500,000 before equity, according to Rya Jetha at Business Insider. The listings show it intends to build robots itself rather than supply software for someone else’s, with openings for actuator design engineers to build the motors that drive a robot’s joints, firmware engineers, a lab technician to build and test systems, and a lawyer for the robotics team. One role would run OpenAI’s data collection facilities. Training robots means making the data first, since nothing on the internet records machines handling physical objects at that scale, so robotics companies generate it or buy it from vendors. Sam Altman said this month that OpenAI will “definitely do a humanoid.”
