OpenAI is building a conversion tracking pixel for ChatGPT ads, moving toward the performance advertising infrastructure of Meta and Google

by | Apr 16, 2026 | E-commerce News

OpenAI is developing a conversion tracking pixel for ChatGPT ads that would fire when users click an ad and complete a defined action on an advertiser's site, such as a purchase, registration, or subscription, closing the measurement loop that advertisers currently lack since ChatGPT's reporting is limited to impressions and clicks only, according to code reviewed by Digiday. The pixel is already live for select advertisers in the pilot and supports event types including lead created, order created, page viewed, subscription created, and trial started, though it is not yet broadly available. The development puts OpenAI on a path to compete for performance budgets rather than just brand spend, though advertisers note it will take time to build the surrounding ecosystem of media mix models, incrementality tests, and third-party attribution tools that give Meta and Google's pixel data its credibility.
