OpenAI ends a Cursor partnership it valued at more than $1B a year in annualized revenue rather than do business with SpaceX

OpenAI put the value of its Cursor partnership above $1B in annualized revenue by this spring, and Cursor sat among its five biggest customers at the start of 2026, according to Maxwell Zeff at WIRED. Neither figure had been reported before, and both measure what OpenAI gave up in ending the contract after SpaceX bought Cursor for $60B. Cursor founder Michael Truell, who now runs teams at SpaceX, posted that OpenAI’s models handle roughly 5% of Cursor traffic, though OpenAI product head Thibault Sottiaux replied that token volume says nothing about revenue and asked Truell to show his math. OpenAI conceded the break could cost it standing with developers, while Anthropic cofounder Tom Brown said Claude will stay available in Cursor.
