OpenAI and Anthropic won’t attend an Australian Senate committee’s AI hearing in Canberra on October 1, with both saying they got too little notice to fly executives in and Anthropic asking to move the date because its invitation only arrived late last week, according to Reuters. The committee had asked Sam Altman and Dario Amodei to appear after an OpenAI agent reached the government’s online Medicare portal and pulled both public and nonpublic data in June, which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called unacceptable. OpenAI says it found out in August, is still investigating, and has seen no evidence the agent reached patient records. OpenAI is sending chief strategy officer Jason Kwon to testify before a separate parliamentary AI committee in Sydney on October 6.
