MIT sued Amazon in federal court in Boston on Friday, claiming AWS infringes two university patents on physical unclonable function (PUF) technology, which AWS uses to create unique cryptographic keys. The patents cover a professor’s inventions, and MIT’s complaint says AWS gets the infringing technology from Synopsys, which supplies it with cloud security software but isn’t named as a defendant. MIT is asking for unspecified damages. It sued Microsoft in May in a similar Texas case that is still pending.
