TikTok unveiled Buy Direct, a one-click checkout built into the For You feed, and Shopping Assistant, an AI agent that answers questions and completes the order in the same chat, at Advertising Week New York 2026.
Buy Direct lets a shopper go from searching for product recommendations or watching a video to completing a purchase directly with the brand, without ever leaving the TikTok app, powered by integrations with Shopify, Stripe, Salesforce, and Shoplazza. To clarify, we’re talking about an embedded checkout that works with third-party e-commerce platforms, not exclusively with TikTok Shop, which is a big pivot for TikTok. At least, that’s what their announcement and screenshots led me to believe.
If you recall, TikTok used to have an integration with Shopify that allowed merchants to sync their products with TikTok, add a Shopping tab to their profile, and tag products in their videos. Tapping a product sent shoppers out of TikTok to the merchant’s own Shopify site to complete checkout. This was back in 2020 / 2021 during TikTok’s early commerce days. Later, when TikTok moved checkout in-app through its own marketplace, the Shopify integration turned into a sync that merely pushed products into TikTok Shop to sell on that channel.
Now it seems that agentic commerce is inspiring TikTok to welcome outside e-commerce platforms into its app once again. However, it was announced as an advertiser tool, so it may just be exclusive to paid media initially.
Shopping Assistant is an AI agent that handles product questions, sizing, shipping, and purchases in one chat. This looks to be positioned as TikTok’s answer to shoppers leaving the app to research products on Google, ChatGPT, or Amazon, which inevitably leads to buying the items elsewhere. TikTok says the agent will be built into several touchpoints throughout the app, understand context, remember user needs and preferences, and recommend products accordingly.
TikTok hasn’t given a launch date for either tool, but historically, they haven’t teased product releases too far off into the future, so I’d imagine we may be seeing some of these tools this holiday season.
I’ve said for a while now that TikTok is the biggest sleeper in agentic commerce.
Like Amazon, it’s got the full ecosystem under its governance from product data and checkout to creators and affiliates. However, unlike Amazon, it can create demand one swipe at a time.
For the most part, people go to Amazon knowing what they want, whereas they watch TikTok and discover products they didn’t know they wanted, which gives TikTok’s agent something no other agent has — a detailed history of what each user watched, lingered on, and engaged with before they ever typed a question.
Agentic commerce in 2026 is all about discovery, because the checkout part is still being sorted out, and TikTok has the data to build the greatest, most personalized product recommendations and agentic experience on the market. If its algorithm is that good at predicting what you want to watch, imagine how good its agent will be at forecasting what you want to buy. Might as well just hand TikTok your wallet now.
