Meta's internal Claudeonomics token usage leaderboard disappeared Wednesday, just days after The Information reported on the gamified ranking, with a company spokesperson saying the employee who created it chose to take it down rather than Meta itself. The leaderboard's removal came after internal backlash, including one Meta staffer who wrote that the energy consumption represented by tokenmaxxing “would be comical if it wasn't so tragic,” and amid reports that some employees were gaming the metrics by instructing AI agents to generate meaningless code changes or deploying transcription bots to inflate their usage stats. Outside of deep-pocketed tech companies, most businesses are taking a different approach to AI adoption, with companies like Axon offering cash bonuses tied to productivity outcomes and Box raising the ambition level of product road maps rather than encouraging raw token consumption.
