Meta is developing plans for a cloud infrastructure business to sell outside customers access to AI computing power and models, setting up new competition with AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, according to Bloomberg. One plan under consideration would sell access to AI models hosted on Meta's infrastructure, including its own Muse Spark models, similar to AWS's Bedrock, while another would rent raw computing capacity like neocloud providers such as CoreWeave. The effort is part of Meta Compute, an internal initiative led by infrastructure head Santosh Janardhan, Meta Superintelligence Labs leader Daniel Gross, and Meta President Dina Powell McCormick. The move offers a way to earn a return on the hundreds of billions Meta has committed to data centers and chips, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg telling shareholders in May that selling excess compute is “definitely on the table.”
