Meta expanded its parent alerts for teen searches about suicide and self-harm from Instagram to Facebook, and it will now also alert parents when a teen’s conversation with Meta AI points to a risk of self-harm. The alerts go to parents who supervise their teen’s account, and they’re triggered when a teen searches for that content several times in a short period, a threshold Meta hasn’t fully defined. Several times? Not, oh I don’t know, the first time? Parents get the alert by text, email, or WhatsApp plus a push notification, and it suggests they talk with their teen and links to helplines without showing the actual searches or chats.
