Google’s $8.25M settlement over AdMob collecting children’s data from Play Store games wins approval, with payouts near $12.55

U.S. District Judge P. Casey Pitts approved Google’s $8.25M settlement with parents who sued in 2023, alleging that its AdMob ad network collected data from children through Play Store games made by Tiny Lab Productions, including Fun Kid Racing. Google had listed those apps in its now-retired Designed for Families program, which required developers to certify they followed COPPA, and the parents argued Google should have known the data came from kids under 13. Claimants are now expected to get about $12.55 each, far below the $40 to $110 their lawyers estimated earlier this year, because many more people filed claims than expected. Pitts said the amount still lines up with payouts in similar privacy cases.
