Meta has launched an internal AI coding assistant called Devmate, powered in part by rival models like Anthropic’s Claude, to improve coding efficiency across the company. Despite investing heavily in its own Llama models, Meta employees report that Devmate outperforms its homegrown tools on complex tasks and reduces workloads significantly. The move reflects Meta’s pragmatic approach to AI adoption, even as it accelerates efforts to improve its own capabilities, including a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and a new “superintelligence” team. For now, however, much of the AI code-writing power Meta relies on comes from competitors.
