Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Meta’s leaders decided late last year to write a check of “$100 billion, $200 billion” for its AI push before it had seen whether the models would work, in a Cheeky Pint podcast interview with Stripe co-founder John Collison. Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said he could offer leadership little more than a “vibe report” and some plots at the time, and that success wasn’t at all clear. Wang said CFO Susan Li pulled him aside repeatedly at a year-end offsite to warn that failure would be “really, really bad” for Meta. The interview posted Monday, the same day Meta launched Muse Wonder, a model the company says matches ChatGPT and Claude on coding, legal, and financial tasks.
