Google updates Search privacy settings to train AI on users’ uploaded photos, voice, and files by default unless they opt out

Google updated its Search-services privacy settings in June to store more user data, including uploaded images, files, and audio and video recordings, and use it to train AI models by default, in a change presented to users as giving them more control over their history and recommendations. Photos snapped through Google Lens, voice input from the Search Live feature, and audio from Translate can now be saved for that training, across services including Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, and News. Users who once limited data retention through Web & App Activity settings aren’t automatically covered, since Google split Search data into a separate setting that stays on by default, though the Save Media box can be unchecked and saved data set to auto-delete after 3, 18, or 36 months.
