Amazon’s delivery driver smart glasses will snap thousands of photos per shift to map neighborhoods, with no customer opt-out

Amazon’s Smart Delivery Glasses snap a photo of whatever a driver sees on foot every few seconds, adding up to thousands of images per shift, according to Dave Lee at Bloomberg Opinion. Human reviewers analyze the photos before they go into Wellspring, Amazon’s AI system for mapping delivery locations, said Viraj Chatterjee, the Amazon executive leading the rollout. Chatterjee told Lee that faces and license plates are blurred first, but that Amazon hasn’t considered letting customers opt out, and Lee reports there’s no way for people to view or delete the photos. Amazon wants 5,000 drivers using the glasses before 2027 and over 20,000 a year after that, and a spokesperson said the surveillance framing “fundamentally mischaracterizes the technology.”
