Google announced on May 19 that it will withdraw API access to its open-source Gemini CLI coding tool from all non-paying users on June 18, handing the project's future exclusively to enterprise customers while replacing it with a closed-source successor called Antigravity CLI that Google acknowledges “won't have 1:1 feature parity right out of the gate.” Gemini CLI, released under the Apache 2.0 license in June 2025, accumulated over 100,000 GitHub stars and more than 6,000 merged pull requests from external contributors, with enterprise customers holding paid Gemini Code Assist licenses exempted. Developers in Google's GitHub discussion thread called the move a “bait and switch,” with launch partners including Figma, Shopify, and Stripe having built integrations that now face disruption within a four-week window.
