Delivery riders in Edinburgh are pushing Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat to open up the algorithms that decide which jobs they get and what those jobs pay, according to Joanna Partridge at the Guardian. One Deliveroo rider tracking his own numbers since mid-2023 has held steady at 3.6 to 3.8 orders an hour while his average fee per order fell from £3.67 to £3.63, then £3.51, and £3.42 so far this year. The riders organize through the Workers’ Observatory, which gig workers set up with St Andrews and Edinburgh academics, and which once had riders in Dunfermline log on together and refuse offers below a set rate, lifting pay for some and getting one deactivated. The platforms say riders clear the national living wage on an order, a measure that leaves out time spent waiting for one.
