Cursor, the AI-powered code-editor company, is developing a general-purpose AI agent internally called Sand to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, according to The Information. Sand would target casual users instead of the developers Cursor built its business on, handling everyday tasks such as email, texts, and spreadsheets on top of engineering work. Work on the agent began after Cursor started leasing compute from SpaceX’s AI unit in April and comes ahead of SpaceX’s planned $60B acquisition of Cursor, set to close in the second half of 2026. Cursor rolled the project out internally in late June, though whether Sand reaches market is unclear given the pending merger that could reshape its roadmap.
