commercetools is pitching a new category it calls “autonomous commerce,” where AI agents make and execute operational decisions like pricing, inventory, and promotions in real time rather than just assisting humans. To run it, the company launched commercetools Sphere, an AI-native headless platform that hosts the usual commerce modules and acts as a governed entry point where any AI agent gets a defined identity, scope, and permission limits. commercetools says Sphere already powers over $100B in annualized GMV, and it frames autonomous commerce as putting AI on the enterprise's side of the counter, distinct from agentic shopping acting for the customer.
