Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission sued Amazon's local unit, alleging it supplied children's “Unicorn Toddler Backpacks” without the warning labels required under mandatory safety standards for button batteries, with the products sitting in Amazon's Australian fulfillment centers from June to November 2022. The backpacks included a detachable light-up unicorn plush toy containing button batteries, which ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe noted can cause severe internal burns and in some cases death if swallowed by young children. The ACCC said 41 backpacks were sold through amazon.com.au during that period, with another 267 still in Amazon's fulfillment centers at the end, and is seeking declarations and penalties from the Federal Court. It's the first Federal Court case the ACCC has brought against an online marketplace over product safety laws.
