Three novice hikers from outside Sacramento had to be rescued off Mount Shasta this week after planning their climb with Google’s Gemini, according to the Chicago Tribune. They kept pushing for the 14,179-foot summit late into the night, well past the noon turnaround the mountain’s guidance calls for. On the way down in the dark they called the Siskiyou County sheriff for directions, then went off route anyway and slept in a neighboring canyon, one of them with an injured knee, until search-and-rescue volunteers and Forest Service rangers walked them out the next morning. The sheriff’s office said Gemini had told the group to pack much less food and water than it needed, which mattered more once an eight-hour hike turned into a multiday one.
