Amazon's Zoox is now charging riders in Las Vegas and running its robotaxis in San Francisco, making it the first company to sell rides in a vehicle built with no steering wheel, pedals, or dashboard, according to Ellie Davis at The Wall Street Journal. NHTSA cleared the paid service last month across a fleet capped at 5,000 cars over two years, but barred the vehicles from roads posted above 45 mph and from heavy rain, snow, or thick leaves, and requires each one to show riders where to file a complaint with the agency. Zoox runs about 100 cars today, built at a Hayward plant it says can turn out 10,000 a year, and prices rides near the comfort tier of other ride-hailing services. Waymo operates roughly 4,000 vehicles, while Tesla hasn't won the same approval for its Cybercab.
