Amazon Web Services can’t recover customer data that sat in data centers Iranian drones hit in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, the company said in a September 15 dashboard update. The loss covers one of three UAE availability zones, mec1-az2, plus all three zones in the Bahrain region, where AWS said the destruction reached across more availability zones than its multi-AZ and regional services were built to survive. Engineers are still replacing infrastructure in the other two UAE zones, while Bahrain customers won’t get another update until early 2027. Iran first struck the sites on March 1, returned to Bahrain on April 1, then hit one remaining Bahrain structure on July 24. AWS suspended billing in both regions and issued a reported $150 million in credits after the March attack.
