Amazon Chief Sustainability Officer Kara Hurst told an Axios audience on Tuesday that the company is still pursuing its 2040 net-zero goal but won’t claim to know every way it will get there, according to Tim De Chant at TechCrunch. Hurst said afterward that the commitment hasn’t changed, but Amazon can’t hit it alone because its emissions run through suppliers in aviation, AI, agriculture and construction. She also cited Amazon’s 42 gigawatts of clean energy and its lower carbon intensity, though Amazon’s own report shows intensity rose in 2025 from 2024. Amazon is meanwhile planning a gas-fired plant for an AI data center campus whose 35 turbines could put out as much as 33 million tons of CO2 a year, more than any other single U.S. source.
