Amazon has asked some FBA sellers to bid per unit for the right to run their products through sub-Same Day delivery, the two-hour service it now offers in 2,300 metro areas. Sellers are charged only for the units that actually ship at that speed, at the price they bid, but consultants who advise sellers said the auction works out to another fee on top of the storage and fulfillment charges FBA already carries. Sellers who want the faster windows also have to buy more inventory and spread it across more warehouses, since sub-Same Day sites stock only about 100,000 products against the millions at a traditional fulfillment center. Amazon said it will keep putting independent sellers’ products into its Same Day network without charging extra.
