An Alphabet shareholder sued CEO Sundar Pichai, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, plus 10 other board members and executives, alleging they knowingly let Google train its AI on copyrighted material and voice recordings without licenses, planning to pay damages later instead. The case is a shareholder derivative suit, so any money recovered would go to Alphabet, and the shareholder wants the court to require board oversight of copyright and biometric privacy compliance. Much of the complaint focuses on music, alleging Google used millions of recordings, compositions, and lyrics, including from YouTube, to build its Lyria and MusicLM models. It also claims Alphabet overpaid for $169.6 billion in stock buybacks because the alleged violations weren’t disclosed.
